Goal: All children in Central Alabama will have year-round access to safe, nutritious foods and participate in a culture where the healthy choice is the desired one.
Primary Metric: Percentage of food-insecure children in Central Alabama with access to nutritious summer meals
Partners: Jefferson County Health Action Partnership, Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, Alabama Food Bank Association, Food Bank of North Alabama Farm Food Collaborative, YMCA of Greater Birmingham, Alabaster City Schools, Samford University, A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club and Walker County Community Action
Proven Success:
- Leveraging federal summer-meal funds to support optimal nutrition and health during the summer months. Every $1.00 invested leverages more than $3.00 in return.
- Alabaster City Schools “WARRIOR WHEELS” served more than 43,000 hot meals to children during the summer of 2016.
- Community Food Bank of Central Alabama coordinated delivery of more than 1,100 meals a day to partner agencies during the summer of 2017.
- Supporting the local farming economy by incorporating fresh Alabama produce into summer meals.
