Project Issue
Alabama ranks second to last in the nation for food insecurity among seniors, with 12.8% of Alabama seniors missing meals or not knowing where their next meal will come from. More than 25,000 seniors in Central Alabama struggle to put food on the table.
Bold Goal
Provide low-income seniors in the five-county Central Alabama region with monthly grocery deliveries to reduce hunger and promote healthy nutrition.
Action
We are working with healthcare providers, food pantries and senior housing facilities to delivery groceries to low-income seniors in Central Alabama who struggle with getting enough to eat.
Impact/Progress
Through the new Senior Grocery Program, more than 1,000 low-income seniors will begin receiving free, monthly grocery deliveries that will help them get through each month without missing meals. Each delivery will include proteins, grains and vegetables, all of which are often missing in seniors’ diets. Within the next year, the program will have the capacity to serve 1,350 seniors across Central Alabama.
